Being a parent

Bringing up kids does not come with an instruction manual for all the things you will face. It is one of the most difficult things you can do as well as one of the most rewarding.  Most people learn how to bring up kids as they go, influenced by the way they were brought up or by what they have read or watched others do.  This section talks about being a parent – a dad, a mum, a teenage parent or a grandparent.

Living with babies

Babies bring with them the excitement of watching a new person grow and develop, the love that comes with caring, and the responsibility of knowing that someone depends on you for everything. Sometimes this means shortage of time and money, the feeling that everything is getting out of control, and a complete change in the way you live.

This section talks about some of those experiences – about babies, how they grow and develop, learn to talk and their sleep patterns. It also describes what we now know from research, which is how important it is to care for babies and provide experiences that help to prepare a strong foundation for their future. When you have a baby you want to do everything you can to give your baby the best start in life.

Stages of development

These days many parents have not had a lot of experience with babies until their first baby comes along. Most parents want to know if their baby is developing ‘normally’. In this section you will find information about some of the changes that you might see in your baby in the first 18 months of life (often called developmental milestones). Each topic gives an idea about what a baby or child will usually do at that age. There will be individual differences, and the differences in the way you care for your child can sometimes have an effect on what your child does.
